Online Web Auctions

For my Information Super Highway second assignment, I have selected the topic Web auctions. I have selected this option, because I thought if I collect all the online web auction links from the internet, it is obvious that all these links used in my assignment will be of great help for others to use my Virtual Library to find information on this topic.

It was very difficult to collect such huge information. But Internet provides so much information on any topic so it was of great help to me in completing this site. I used AskJeeves, Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Hotbot, CSU Library, Virtual Library, and Lycos to search for Web auctions around the world.

I browsed through Google and I entered the key word "auctions AND jewellery OR gems OR pearls", which came up with 1,05,000 results. Search took 0.34 seconds. Google is one of the best search engines. This is beyond my position to surf around and collect information for virtual library. Then I used advance feature of Google as provided within the site to narrow down the search result and used boolean syntax like "auctions + music", which came up with 1,640,000 results and the search took .25 seconds.

Once I was done with Google I went to AltaVista Site and entered entered the key word "auction+antiques" at this time it came up with 1,47,871 search results. AltaVista is not an exact functioning as google, but I liked it as it was the first search engines I have found on the Internet long time ago. I tried a different key word like "internet auct*" and it came up with 50,665 results.

Askjeeves provided results when searched with different key words like "auc*". This used to be an efficient search engine, but now compared to other search engines AskJeeves found fewer results.

After finishing search engines search I searched in Yahoo which is basically a search directory rather than a search engine. It has well organized directory lists, where we could find almost every thing without much difficulty. Although Yahoo is not search engines, it is efficient and accurate and also it is powered by Google. It yielded 1376 results when searched with the keyword "auctions".

This site was useful in getting optimum results when the key words "auctions OR internet auctions" were used and it turned up with 1,45,569 results.

Hotbot is a meta search engine which provided some good results. Key words used were "aucti*" and it yielded 2,691,900 results.
